rare books blog post image

Whether you’re looking for a specific edition to add to your collection or wondering what your old books in the attic might be worth, knowing how to identify and find a rare book can come in handy.

First, let’s explore what actually makes a book rare, so you can learn how to shop (and sell) wisely.

What Is Considered a Rare Book?

The traditional definition of a “rare book” is any book whose value is enhanced because its demand exceeds its supply. This is usually due to its importance, scarcity, age, condition, physical properties, or subject matter.

Books with 25,000 printed copies or more in circulation typically are not considered “rare.” However, the most important factor is demand; if there is no demand for it, a book generally isn’t considered “rare,” even if all the other qualities are present.

How Can I Find a Rare Book I’m Looking For?

If you’re on the hunt for a rare book, keep these 4 tips in mind to get the most out of your search.

1. Know what you’re looking for.

To hunt down a rare book, you should first have an idea of what you’re looking for. Ideally, you’ll have a title, and as many other details that might help.

However, there are plenty of ways to find a book without knowing the title, including the author name, plot details, and even descriptions of the cover or other elements.

You can also try writing a short, two-sentence summary into Google.

2. Narrow your scope.

Once you’ve tracked down the book’s title, research its publication history and different editions that have been published. If there is a specific edition you’d like to have, you’ll need find out as much as you can about it.

Keep in mind that when it comes to rare books, first editions are usually more valuable than later editions of a book.

You should determine whether you want to try to find a copy signed by the author, or some other unique detail (like a specific dust jacket or illustrator) that might make the book rare.

3. Try a book search tool.

When in doubt, the Internet always pulls through. There are already several sites out there that specialize in searches for rare and antique books, which can make your job so much easier.

Abe Books offers a very extensive network that allows you to search books, fine art, and collectibles offered by independent sellers from all over the world.

Alibris is a popular book search site that allows you to search for rare and collectible books, including signed copies, first editions, and antiquarians, in a variety of ways.

Book Finder, similarly, allows you to search thousands of books, but also compare prices of the same book from different sellers.

Biblio specializes in used, rare, and out of print books. They are affiliated with more than 5,500 bookstores.

4. Research the seller.

If you’re buying rare books online (or in person for that matter), you should do your due diligence and make sure you trust the seller.

If you’re unable to see the condition of the book before you buy it, you’re taking a risk. You should always try to compare several copies to make sure that you are getting the best value for your money.

Only buy online from reputable sources. Ask questions and make sure that you understand the seller’s guarantees and return policies. And if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.

How Do You Know If a Book Is Valuable?

There are many reasons why a book might be valuable. However, here are a few of the most common factors that indicate a book could be rare:

  • The book is a first edition. Signs that a book is a first edition include:
    • the date on the copyright page and the title page are the same;
    • the words “first edition,” “first impression,” or “first printing” are present on the copyright page;
    • the book’s edition number line (a specific series of numbers) indicated the edition number.
  • The book was signed or autographed by the author.
  • A famous person previously owned the book.
  • The book has unique printing, binding, or other aesthetic elements.
  • The book is very old and in pristine condition.

Again, these are just possible signs that a book is rare. Remember that by definition, a book can only be rare if demand for it exceeds the available supply.
