Memoirs and autobiographies are nonfiction genres that chronicle the writer’s life but in different ways.
A memoir is an account of a specific time in a writer’s life and focuses on the writer’s own memories, perceptions, and emotions.
An autobiography is a chronological history of the writer’s whole life. This style is less about the emotions associated with events and more about the facts of the events themselves.
If you’ve written a personal account of your life, whether in memoir or autobiography, and are ready to get your book published, check out this list.

Second on the list, Soft Skull states, There are presently no open calls for submissions.
First one I looked at, City Lights, states that they are not accepting submissions at this time. Might want to update the list.
Wow, this is interesting. I’m going to go on a campaign to see if I can garner some interest in my ‘fictionalized memoir.’ I’ve published four books commercially (Putnam/Berkley and Thomas Dunne) and eight books on Amazon/KDP. Some working titles of my book are:
The Fake Memoir of a Mid-List Author
Up Is Awful Far When You’re Lowdown
I’m a Fool to Want You
Coming Home and Going Nowhere
Life and Love in the Crab Bucket
Thank you for this info!
I’m almost finished with my memoir regarding my cancer journey with multiple myeloma and stem cell transplant. Do you think there’s a market for a book like that I was considering just self publishing and selling it through social media.
I would like to tell my story about getting into Law Enforcement. The story would include my teenage years which probably prevented me from getting hired because of my life experience. It would include my failures and rejections, medical traumas that include having to learn how to walk again at age 35. Putting myself through academy classes and finally getting hired at age 50 as a Reserve Deputy. I would also include how I went through the Academy again at 55 and was hired as a full time Deputy also at age 55. I talk about how I wanted to help people and to never give up a dream as I was diagnosed Incorrectly with ALS in 2016. I worked as a Deputy until 2019. The entire story is about helping people, life long dreams, always fighting through the hard times and succeeding. Is this a story people would like to hear?
My Memoire is almost complete. It’s the story of the hard life I went through with my not so nice father, how I, nevertheless pushed on single handedly, my mother, my only supporter having died rather too early. Its the story of my adventures, often not believed by most people, true though they are.
Just found this. Interesting. I have self published my book titled From Magic to Mania a Bipolar Journey. I grew up in an amazing little village. George Orwell is buried there. HH Asquith also. My life was magic then. At 30 I had set up my own recruitment business West of London and was doing very well. Then Bipolar came along. A journey I didn’t particularly want to take began. The Mania had started. I write about how it feels to experience psychosis and the devastation it brings. It’s available on Amazon but I would love a proper publishing contract.
Thanks for sharing your story, Arthur! A traditional publishing deal is definitely worth considering. You can also check out this list of memoir literary agents who can help you secure a deal.
I spent 18 years keeping notes about what was going on in my life. I now have “August 20, 1985: The Day my Psychotic Episodes Ended.” It tells the story of my experience with what is commonly called “mental illness” in our society and how I came out the other side, a healed, complete person by completing the fantasy stage of development that had been interrupted when my father left for the army and was killed during WWII. It’s a testament to the healing properties of the human psyche and shows the negative psychiatric “beliefs” that would have prevented my healing.
I have an 8000 word memoir and photos re: a cruise trip I took as onboard escort to author James Michener and hiw wife in Alaska. I need ideas on where else to submit it. I have been turned down by Creative Non-Fiction Magazine, 2 cruise lines, Alaska Magazine, Swarthmore College (where he was an undergrad), the Smithsonian, and Virgina Quarterly Journal. Your suggestions would be most welcomed.
Hi Hazel, thanks for sharing about your book, it sounds really inspiring and fascinating!
I recently retyped and annotated the memoir of a relative (1897-1989) and am looking for a publisher that might be interested in it. My relative was a Zelig/Forrest Gump-like guy. The memoir starts with his earliest memories growing up in Brooklyn in a store-front cigar-making family, his playmates, and neighbors; discusses his hobbies (ham radio and listening in on conversations of famous people; dancing — he learned to dance and assisted Oscar Duryea), his various jobs, including at Mutual Film Corp, where he met silent screen writers, directors, and actors; being a notary, for which he spent a night in jail for notarizing a customer’s fraudulent claims; working as a finger printer in Trinidad (1942) and Manaus, Brazil (1943), and managing Amy and Air Force Post Exchanges around the world (1944 – 1963), during which time he met Bob Hope, VP Richard Nixon, and others. In retirement, he mastered Akido and met Morihei Ueshiba. The memoir is filled with charming stories and provides insight into a very different slice of 20th century life. Anyway, I’d appreciate recommends about publishers that might be interested in this historical memoir.
Hi Barbara! Wow, that sounds like such an interesting memoir! I think any of the publishers on this list would be interested in a story like that. It will mostly come down to whether or not you have a literary agent, as not all on this list accept unsolicited submissions.
My 19th book is an eccentric memoir entitled Outsider: Travels With Thoreau and Myself. “Outsider” refers to the fact that I prefer the out-of-doors to the indoors and also to the fact that I’m outside any known social group. Any thoughts about a publisher?
Hi Lawrence, it really depends on what the major themes/ideas are in your memoir. You can check out each of these publishers and see if any have published or are interested in publishing books similar to yours.
This was very helpful to me.
Glad you found it helpful Diana :)
Thank you so much for sharing this information. I have just completed my Memoir titled “The Naked Truth” that is a true story of my 25 years in the federal government and seven years of racism and retaliation that ended my career. I hope to find an agent who will represent me with this project. I can’t wait to share my story to the world!
that’s great, daphnie! We have a list of memoir agents you can check out here. best of luck with your book!
Thanks for sharing, Kaelyn!
you’re very welcome! :)
I am very interested in the memoir
I am a real life June Osborne.
I’m nothing special. I’m just another number…one in…too many to count.
My memoir would read like a real life Handmaids Tale…only its all 100% true and requires no embellishment to maintain a readers interest.
My baby was stolen from me 18 years ago while I was drugged and forced to sign papers I wasn’t allowed to read. It’s particularly relevant in todays culture and the purpose is not for personal recovery or healing…but to raise awareness to the horriffic acts being committed in plain sight.
I need help writing it and publishing.
Hi Audrey, thank you for sharing your story, I’m so sorry you had to go through such traumatic events. If you need help writing your book, I would suggest working with a nonfiction book coach. As for publishing (and also some help writing/editing), you can check out this list of nonfiction literary agents.
The title of this list is completely misleading! Is is NOT publishers of memories and was a complete total waste of my time. Amazing that you make money providing such nonsense.
Hi Ann, thank you for your comment. There are publishers on this list currently accepting memoirs, but this post does need to be updated (some were probably accepting memoirs at the time this was published). I’m sorry for the inconvenience, I’ll work on getting this updated soon.
Please update this list to publishers with do memoirs. I have wasted hours writing to this list
Name misspelled. See below
I would like to publish my memoir in French, I wrote it in French. Can you recommend a publsher? Thanks.
Hi Paulina, I’m not very familiar with French publishers so I can’t recommend a specific one, but you might check out this list :)
Thank you so much for a head start for my Memoir.
You’re very welcome Judy, I’m glad you found the list helpful! :)
I just finished my autobiography manuscript that took place 20 yrs ago pertaining smuggling marijuana complete with court documents and discovery transcripts. A kind of look back like the alcohol prohibition era. Any literary recommendations, I have a query letter and book proposal.
Hi Joseph, thanks for your comment! I don’t know enough about these to recommend a specific one, but you can check their guidelines/manuscript wishlists to see if there are any that match your niche. It’s great that you have the query letter ready, so you can send those to any that sound promising.
Hi…I published my debut book…my memoir 3 years ago and I am now thinking of switching to an alternative publisher. I have never employed an agent. From your list of publishers are you aware of any who would be willing to republish my book?
Hi Lilly, thanks for your comment! I don’t know of any specifically, it varies from publisher to publisher. You can check out their guidelines, usually they’ll include info about whether they do or don’t take on previously published work.
Hi,
Thanks so much for this list! Are you aware which of these are open to direct submissions from authors, or need an agent?
Thank you,
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer, I think the list contains a mix, so you’ll have to just check their guidelines.
I am currently looking to publish my memoir, From The Inside Out. It is my journey with bipolar disorder forming a narrative arc from onset, through the four stages of the disorder to living my best possible life. Your article has given me some invaluable info. Thank you.
Hi Denise, we’re so glad you found it helpful! Best of luck with your memoir :) Please let us know if you have any publishing questions!
Michael Bankiewicz. I am 97 years of age and wrote a book covering the time from 1923 to the present. It is mostly a biography but also my personal account of the history and changes that occurred during my lifetime. It all began in Eastern Europe when only a few had telephones and automobiles. Kicked about by historical events I was an airplane builder in Germany, a vagrant in France, a soldier in England, a Ph.D. chemist in Canada and the USA, a racing sailor, a family man and now a senior citizen. I was an “untermensh” in Germany and an important “ubermensh” at times in other places. I would like to have my book published.
My e-mal is michael.bankiewicz @ Yahoo .com.
Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. Wow!! You’ve certainly lived a remarkable life! TCK is currently open to memoir submissions. You can review our submission guidelines here If you have any questions, or if there are any resources or advice we can provide to help you submit your work to any of these other publishers, please let me know. We’d be happy to help! :)
Hi there, It says a few times here that TCK accepts memoirs but when I go to the link it says they don’t. Any suggestions? I’m looking for a UK publisher preferably. Thanks.
Hi Sarah, thanks for pointing that out. Though we have in the past, we are not currently accepting memoirs. I have updated the list and other mentions on the site. Sorry for the confusion!
