If you’ve written a nonfiction book or book proposal and you’re looking for a major book deal, you’re going to need a great literary agent.
But not just any literary agent will do. You need to make sure you find an agent who actually specializes in nonfiction.
But that’s not enough either, because many nonfiction agents do not accept submissions from others. Agents close their submissions for several reasons, usually because they have enough clients already, or because they only accept new clients from referrals once they’ve built up a large enough business.
So if you don’t already have someone who can give you a warm introduction to an agent, you’re going to need to find an agent on your own—someone who is currently accepting submissions.
List of Nonfiction Literary Agents Accepting Submissions
With that in mind, our team did some research, and we found 41 agents who specialize in nonfiction and are currently open to submissions.
But before you contact each of these agents, make sure you do your research!
You’ll need to make sure you read their submission guidelines and follow them exactly. Many agents only accept book proposals, while others may accept submissions without a proposal.
You’ll also need to write a great query letter (you can learn how to do that and other great tips on finding a literary agent here). Most agents will simply delete or ignore your email if you don’t write a query letter and follow their submission guidelines.

Hello.
I have written a non-fiction, psychology, self-help book detailing how I became a love and sex addict and the journey I took to overcome these addictions. I wrote the book for the purpose of helping other addicts to overcome these terrible addictions as I did. I have applied to hundreds of literary agents using QueryTracker, but none were interested in even looking at the manuscript. The book obviously is not going to be a best-seller, hence the lack of interest. I don’t want to self-publish or use a vanity publisher. What would you recommend as my next step to get my book published?
Hi Teresa I am interested in knowing more about your book on metaphysics. I am have a very similar interest, and just would like to know how you tie science and religion together?
Hi there. I hope you are having a good day/evening or whenever you read your messages. In the UK, one of the largest minorities are the Pakistanis, two-thirds or more of the community are Kashmiris whose ‘biography’ I have written (more than half of the book is done). Its a story not been told in this way ie ethnographical and sociological so I think it will be a reference for many years to come, for Kashmiris, those who work with them, academics etc. The writing covers the early days (1900-1975) includes description of life in Kashmir, lives of the British Kashmiris and description of the areas they settled in the UK. The challenge is who to publish it through. I have already written a self published autobiography that has been received well and also an academic/education book with Routledge that has also been received well and have a contract to write another book with them.
Hi Kaelyn,
I’ve recently self-published a very topical book that gives a new and comprehensive structure for intentional communities, based on private property. This is not a topic that is on nonfiction subject lists. I just sent the book to a publishing house that specializes in sustainable living, but even if they turn out to be interested in the book, I know I will need an agent. Any suggestions on an agency to query?
Hi Valerie, thanks for your comment! If the publishing house accepted your submission without an agent, you may not need one at all. But if you decide you’re more comfortable proceeding with one, I would suggest checking the websites/wishlists of the nonfiction agents here and see if any specialize in work related to yours. It probably won’t be a precise match in your niche, but as long as it’s somehow related you can try.
I have a book ready for publishing. No one has ever read it other than myself. It is fully referenced and based on historical facts regarding the murder of 70 million Jews by the Catholic Church. Also, its links and involvement with fascism and how its Vatican based Propaganda Department has managed to hide the truth for hundreds of years. It features Mussolini, Hitler, Franco, and others and shows the actual links to the Church.
I also have three other books that are currently works in progress.
Hi William, thanks for sharing about your book! If you’re looking for an agent, I’d contact the ones on this list who are interested in books about history (you can see what they’re interested in on their websites or manuscript wishlists).
I am the first person in the history of human thought to logically prove the existence of God with no need for faith, just logic. St. Augustine tried to do this and failed in the 13th century. His book, The Summa Theologica, is still in print. I prove it, so my book should be in print longer than that. I need a literary agent who understands the significance of this opportunity and can explain it to a publisher. This is an opportunity to not just make money, but to actually be part of history.
Hi Thomas, you can check out the agents’ wishlists and see if any have interests that align with your work, or you can also check out out list of christian literary agents.
Hi I’m looking for agents, preferably in UK, who might be interested in a book written primarily about gender but is in fact a very deep self inquiry into who we are. Any pointers are highly appreciated.
Hi Muna, thanks for your comment! I don’t know enough about each agent to recommend based on your criteria, but if you browse the manuscript wishlists you might find a good match :)
I completed my book “Why I Shot at Chinese Consulate” in March 2021. It is non-fictional. It has the subtitle, “The Chinese communist persecution mania, and their American accomplices’ vice.” It is now published via Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.
I have sent a book copy to President Joe Biden in late April. He sent a letter to me and he likes my book. Now, I want to find a literary agent so that I can reach more readers for the book.
congratulations on your book, Jeff! I’m sure there’s a good match on this list :)
Hi, is there a list of agents who accept literary memoir from unpublished authors?
Thank you.
Hi Julie, you can check out this list of memoir literary agents.
Hi Kaelyn,
I am a Christian writer/author. I’ve been published in 3 nat’l Christian magazines, written for Disney, BVHE, Blu-ray & ABC Studios. I’ve authored an inspirational true story titled:NO TIME TO CRY – One Mother’s Will to Survive Against All Odds. Self pub’d it in 2013. It garnered 5 star rating from amazon & excellent reviews. It was published a 2nd time by Tate Publishing (but they went out of biz shortly thereafter.) – I have kept interest/demand up via social media as well as making myself available to churches to share my story. – I have done so both here in Oregon as well as South Florida where I am from. I get asked almost daily where folks can buy my book. I am in serious need of a traditional publisher..and one I can trust. – My book details the true accounts of my struggles as a single mother dealing with 9/11 job losses, evictions, theft, sexual harassment, bounced paychecks, near deaths of both my children, and a life threatening health condition, but never losing faith in God. 100% feedback from readers is all the same: they laughed & cried through the entire book.
I uploaded you my book contents a few days ago in pdf format.
Hi Tom, I am just writing my first query letter. Is your list ‘Nonfiction Literary Agents Now Accepting Submissions’ up to date as of 28th April 2021? Kind regards, Pam
Hi Pam, the list was actually written a while ago, so we’ll work on updating it, but in the meantime I would just check that the agents are still active by following the links
I am a writer and freelance editor who has written a children’s books series and am currently finishing my memoir/creative non-fiction.
The series is to push back against the current statistics of the lack of Black/brown characters in books for children’s consumption, understanding and assimilation. You can’t be what you don’t see! It is inspired by my daughters and the bedtime stories we make up together.
My memoir is a deep dive into my personal life and trials as an immigrant to New York and how I navigated that from the young age of 17 well into adulthood. It shows the adjustments and readjustments immigrants often have to make with family and relationships, money and sacrifices and self identity.
To bring this story full circle, I was hoping to have it published in New York City, though I am currently based in London.
Any advice/thoughts for these?
Hi Carlene, thanks for sharing about your book! I think it sounds like a great idea. You might find our list of nonfiction publishers helpful https://www.tckpublishing.com/list-of-nonfiction-publishers/
I’ve just completed a book on mental health i the form of a novel entitled, “The Journey is the Treasure.” I’m a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist with 4 college degrees, former invited speaker at FBI headquarters addressing issues of Columbine High School massacre. I’ve self published 6 previous books. This is my first novel….It is full of mental health principles and suggestions for healthy living. I really believe it could help a lot of people!
It sounds like it could certainly help many! Which genre would you say your book would fall under? I can share a list of literary agents for your genre
I finished a non-fiction book on how quantum computing and AI will shape our societies and as yet we have no clue how they will change us fundamentally. But scientists and artists are experimenting in a pas de deux with visual and verbal languages to convey encounters between humans and intelligent machines. (No science fiction, no graphic novel). May I kindly ask if you would consider your engagement.
Hi Bob, you’re more than welcome to submit your manuscript for our consideration. You can find our submission guidelines here.
I have written a book on Rethinking Judaism. If this might be up your alley, please contact me.
Hi Martin, you’re welcome to submit your nonfiction work, you can find our guidelines here.
Thank you for getting back to me Kaelyn. I just sent in my submission. Are you an agent as well?
Hi Martin, no I’m not an agent, but I am an editor.
I was directed to this site to submit a pandemic poem but don’t see how/where to do that. Can you please help me? Thank you.
Hi Kathy! If you’re referring to our poetry contest, you can find the guidelines and submit your poem here.
I am in the process of writing a book focusing on employability for people over the age of 50. I would be looking to get the book into careers centres throughout the UK, possibly into local libraries and produced as a Kindle copy?…. Are there any agents who would consider this type of non fiction material?
Thanks
Hi John, I would focus on those who are looking for self-help or career advice/professional development in their manuscript wishlists.
I self-published an award-winning book called The Grace Solution: for Overcoming Overeating. I am working on a revised edition with a slight reframing of the message with a new title and looking for help with traditional publishing. I can be contacted through my website at https://graceweigh.wixsite.com/thegracesolution.
Hi Allison, thanks for sharing about your book! You might find this post helpful. TCK accepts submissions of previously self-published work, and you don’t need a literary agent to submit. Please let us know if you have any specific questions we can help you with :)
